Artxanda Funicular

The Artxanda Funicular is a short railway that climbs the hill above Bilbao, and it is one of the best ways to see the city and its setting at a glance. The line opened in 1915 and has been carrying residents and visitors up the slope for more than a century, and it is still part of the public transport system, so the ticket is easy to buy and the fare is low. The lower station is on the north bank of the estuary, and the carriage climbs steeply for a few minutes through the neighbourhood before reaching the summit.

The view from the top of Mount Artxanda is the attraction. Bilbao lies spread out in the valley of the Nervión estuary, surrounded by green hills, and from the viewpoint you can follow the river as it bends through the city, past the old town and the modern waterfront. The titanium curves of the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao stand out beside the river, and on the other side the district around the football stadium of San Mamés and the hills beyond mark the edge of the city. To the north, beyond the hills towards the Bay of Biscay, the Txorierri valley opens out towards the airport, and in clear weather the mountains and the coast are visible in the distance. The view changes with the light, and at sunset the city lights begin to appear while the sky colours.

At the top there is a viewing terrace and Artxanda Park with paths, picnic areas and open lawns, and there are traditional restaurants known for roast meats and grilled dishes, where people from the city go on weekends. The hilltop is popular for walking, cycling and jogging, and marked routes lead along the ridge, so a visit can be a short stop or a longer walk. The funicular is also practical for those who would rather not climb the steep streets.

A good way to use it is to go up in the late afternoon, enjoy the view and a drink or meal, and walk or return as the lights come on. The weather in Bilbao is changeable and the hill is often in cloud or drizzle, so the best views are on clear days, and it helps to check a webcam or forecast first. Bring a layer, since the summit can be breezy.

Bilbao’s other attractions are within easy reach from the lower station. The Casco Viejo, the Plaza Nueva, the Mercado de la Ribera and Bilbao Cathedral are a short walk away, and the Bilbao Fine Arts Museum, the Zubizuri Bridge and the waterfront of Abandoibarra are easy to reach on the other side of the river. Operating hours change by season, so check the current timetable before travelling.
