Mercado Mayor

Plaza Mayor, often referred to locally as Mercado Mayor, is the vibrant heart of Salamanca, a city known as "La Ciudad Dorada" for its golden sandstone architecture. Constructed between 1729 and 1755, this UNESCO World Heritage site is a masterpiece of Spanish Baroque design. Originally conceived by architect Alberto de Churriguera and completed by Andrés García de Quiñones, the square features a unique, perfectly irregular shape that integrates seamlessly into the urban fabric.

The plaza is surrounded by four levels of arcades supported by equilateral arches. Above the arches, intricate medallions carved into the spandrels depict important figures in Spanish history, adding a layer of cultural depth to the visual experience. The square serves as a bustling social hub, often described as the city’s living room. Visitors can enjoy the lively atmosphere, with restaurants, cafes, and shops lining the perimeter.

In the evenings, the square comes alive with performances by traditional student groups known as "Tunas," who play music in the outdoor seating areas. The plaza is open 24 hours a day with no admission fee, allowing visitors to explore at their leisure.
