Playa de Sotavento

Playa de Sotavento is a vast and highly popular beach located on the south-east coast of Fuerteventura, Spain, within the municipality of Pájara. Stretching for approximately 5 kilometers, the name "Sotavento" means "leeward side," referring to its naturally sheltered position. The beach is geographically divided into distinct sections, primarily Playa Barca in the north and Playa Risco del Paso in the south, with additional areas including Mirador, Malnombre, and Los Canarios.

The landscape is characterized by wide stretches of white sand that appear to glow in the sunlight and turquoise waters. Playa Barca is particularly notable for its size, reaching up to 230 meters in width, and is scattered with shrubs and palms. Due to its immense length, the beach prevents overcrowding, offering ample space for visitors even during the high season from April to September.

The area is a premier destination for water sports enthusiasts, especially for kitesurfing, windsurfing, and surfing, thanks to the consistent warm winds. Various clubs offer equipment hire and lessons. For families, the calm waters and extensive facilities, including toilets, kiosks, beach bars, and lifeguards at Playa Barca, make it a safe and comfortable choice. Snorkeling is also recommended in the clearer, shallower areas. Access is primarily by car via the FV-2 highway, with parking available near the main access points. While dining options are limited to kiosks in Costa Calma and Risco del Paso, visitors are advised to bring their own food for longer stays. The beach is open to the public with no admission fee.
