Tibidabo Amusement Park

Tibidabo Amusement Park sits on top of the mountain that overlooks Barcelona, reached by a combination of vintage transport and a steep climb. The hill is the highest point in the Collserola range, rising to about five hundred metres, and the park, which opened in 1901, is among the oldest in the world still in operation. It was created by a local entrepreneur who wanted to bring Barcelonians out of the city for fresh air and entertainment, and the transport links, a blue tram and a funicular, were built to bring them up. The tram, the Tramvia Blau, and the funicular still operate and are part of the day's appeal.

What sets Tibidabo apart from a modern theme park is its character. Many of the rides are old, with painted details and a nostalgic charm. A tall carousel with horses and lights, a big wheel, a swinging ship, a small roller coaster and a gentle ride that takes you above the city in an aeroplane-shaped car are the traditional favourites. The Museu d'Autòmats, with mechanical figures and toys from the early twentieth century, is one of the less obvious pleasures and shows how entertainment looked a century ago. The park has newer attractions as well, including a children's area, and the rides range from gentle to thrilling.

The views are the other main reason to come. From the terraces, the whole of Barcelona lies below, with the grid of the Eixample, the harbour, Montjuïc and, on clear days, the sea stretching to the horizon, and sometimes the mountains in the far distance. Next to the park, at the very summit, stands the Temple Expiatori del Sagrat Cor, a church with a large statue of Christ with open arms, and visitors can ascend to terraces with a still wider view. The nearby communications tower designed by Norman Foster is visible on a neighbouring ridge.

The park is a good option for families with young children, and many people come simply for the setting and a stroll. Food options are available at kiosks and restaurants, and picnics are possible in the surrounding woods of Collserola, where trails cross the hillside.

To get there, take the Tramvia Blau and the funicular, or use public transport and a bus to the top. The park is open on selected days that vary through the year, so check the calendar before you go. Combine it with the other sights of the city, such as the Sagrada Família and Park Güell.
