Turia Gardens (Jardín del Turia)

The Turia Gardens, or Jardín del Turia, is a nine-kilometer-long urban park in Valencia, created along the old riverbed of the Turia River. The park’s origin dates back to 1957, when devastating floods led to the river’s diversion. Although a highway was initially planned, local activism resulted in the creation of a public green space, which officially opened in 1986. Today, it is recognized as Europe’s longest urban park and serves as a vital green lung for the city, contributing to Valencia’s designation as European Green Capital in 2024.

The park stretches from the Parque de Cabecera in the west to the City of Arts and Sciences in the east, connecting major cultural and recreational areas. It features diverse landscapes, including pine forests, orange groves, rose gardens, and structured Mediterranean gardens designed by international architects. The route includes 18 bridges and offers flat, accessible paths ideal for walking, cycling, and running. Visitors can also enjoy segway rides and relax in various recreational zones equipped with sports facilities and playgrounds.

The gardens are home to a variety of flora, including palm trees and aromatic plants, creating a pleasant atmosphere for leisure. The park serves as both a thoroughfare and a destination, with cultural venues and dining options scattered throughout. Walking the entire length takes approximately two hours, though most visitors explore specific sections. The Turia Gardens offer a unique blend of nature, history, and urban recreation, providing a peaceful retreat within the city.
