Casa de la Memoria

The Casa de la Memoria de La Sauceda is a small museum and archive in Jimena de la Frontera, a hill town in the interior of the province of Cádiz, not in the city of Cádiz itself. It is dedicated to preserving the memory of La Sauceda, a rural village in the cork-oak woods of the Los Alcornocales natural park, whose population was killed or dispersed in the early weeks of the Spanish Civil War. In October 1936, forces of the rebel side attacked the village, and many residents were murdered, while the survivors were scattered and the houses were burned. The story was long silenced during the Franco dictatorship, and it has been recovered in recent decades through the work of survivors' families, local associations and researchers.

The building, which once housed an ironmonger's shop, became a memorial centre through the efforts of the community. A Republican flag, the tricolour of the Second Spanish Republic, flies outside and makes the house easy to identify on the street. Inside, the exhibits are arranged over three floors. They include documents, photographs, personal objects and testimonies that explain what happened at La Sauceda and at the nearby farm of Cortijo El Marrufo, as well as the wider history of repression in the region and the Campo de Gibraltar, where many Republican prisoners were forced to work after the war.

A particular strength of the centre is its collection of recorded interviews. Survivors and their relatives describe what they saw and what their families went through, and the films have subtitles in English, so that international visitors can follow. The building also has an archive, a library with a large number of books on the war and Francoism, and rooms for talks, workshops and educational programmes. The aim is not only to remember the dead but to encourage reflection and debate.

The visit is a sober and moving experience, and it suits travellers who want to understand the darker side of twentieth-century Spain, as well as students and people with a particular interest in historical memory. It also puts into context the countryside around Jimena, where the ruins of La Sauceda can be reached on a memorial walking route in the Alcornocales park.

Jimena is about an hour and a half by road from Cádiz, so plan the trip as a separate excursion. The village has a castle and a pleasant old town. Check the opening times of the museum before travelling, as it is run by volunteers and associations.
