Casa de la Memoria

The Casa de la Memoria de la Sauceda, located in Jimena de la Frontera within the province of Cadiz, serves as a museum and archive dedicated to preserving the history of the Spanish Civil War in Andalusia. Founded by local associations, the building was originally an ironmonger’s shop before being converted into a memorial space in 2012. It is easily identifiable by the flag of the Second Spanish Republic displayed outside.

The facility houses a comprehensive collection of documents, photographs, and testimonies related to Republican repression under the Franco regime. Exhibits detail the experiences of anti-Franco guerrilla forces and the forced labor of approximately 30,000 Republican prisoners brought to the Campo de Gibraltar region. The permanent exhibition also covers the history of La Sauceda, an abandoned village, and Cortijo El Marrufo, providing a tangible connection to the area’s past.

Spanning three floors, the site includes a library with over 1,900 books, an archive, and conference rooms for debates and educational programs. The museum offers films of interviews with survivors and their families, with subtitles available in English to assist international visitors. This resource allows travelers to engage with a significant and often overlooked aspect of Spanish history.
