La Mola

La Mola Lighthouse is a significant landmark in Formentera, Spain, situated on the island’s highest point, Sa Talaïassa, which rises 192 meters above sea level. The lighthouse itself stands on a cliff 120 meters above the Mediterranean, offering panoramic views of the surrounding waters and the nearby island of Ibiza. Opened in 1861, the site is historically linked to author Jules Verne, whose novel Hector Servadac was reportedly inspired by the lighthouse’s beam. A monument honoring Verne stands nearby.

Since 2019, the lighthouse has also served as a cultural hub. It houses a cultural space dedicated to maritime heritage, and from 2026, it features a permanent display of 56 works by artist Cati Verdera. The interior includes a maritime museum and cultural center.

Visitors can access the site Tuesday through Sunday, with hours varying by season. In 2026, general hours are 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM, and on Wednesdays and Sundays, it is also open from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM. The site is closed on Mondays and from December 1 to February 11. Admission costs €4.50, with reduced rates for students and retirees, and free entry for residents, children under 18, and the unemployed. The location is considered one of the most magical spots in the Balearic Islands, particularly for watching the sunrise. Nearby amenities include the Mercat hippie del Pilar de la Mola and several restaurants. The site provides a unique blend of natural beauty, history, and contemporary art.
