Playa de la Restinga

Playa de la Restinga is a small beach beside the fishing village of La Restinga, at the southern tip of El Hierro, the westernmost and smallest of the main Canary Islands. This is a volcanic coast, with black sand and dark lava rocks, and a harbour and breakwater that make the water near the shore calmer than the open Atlantic along much of the island. The village is the island's main centre for diving, and the beach is a simple, local place rather than a resort strip.

The sea here is the main attraction. The waters around the south of El Hierro form the Mar de las Calmas marine reserve, a protected area known for clear water and healthy marine life. Divers and snorkellers can see fish, rays and, with experience, some of the deeper reef life that clings to the volcanic slopes. Several diving centres operate from the village and organise outings, so beginners can take an introductory dive while experienced divers go further out.

La Restinga is also associated with a recent geological event. In October 2011 an underwater eruption began off the coast, close to the village, and continued for months, creating a new volcanic cone under the sea. The village was evacuated for a time, and the episode left a visible mark on the area's memory. Looking out from the shore it is easy to understand how young the island is, and how active the volcanic forces that shaped it can still be.

The village itself is small and quiet, with a handful of restaurants serving fresh fish and local dishes, typically cooked simply with potatoes and the island's spicy sauces, mojo. Evenings are calm, and you can watch fishing boats come into the harbour. Do not expect nightlife or large hotels. The charm is the sense of being at the end of the island.

The beach suits swimmers who like calm water, divers, and travellers who enjoy simple fishing villages. Bring water shoes if you dislike hot black sand, and a towel and sun protection, since shade is limited. Sea conditions can change, so check them before swimming. Because the village is far from the island's main towns, plan transport in advance, and combine the visit with other sights of the south and the El Golfo and Lighthouse areas.
