Praia das Catedrais

Praia das Catedrais, also known as As Catedrais Beach, is a renowned natural landmark located in Ribadeo, in the province of Lugo, Galicia, Spain. It is situated approximately 150 kilometers east of A Coruña. The beach is designated as a Natural Monument and is famous for its dramatic geological formations, including monumental natural arches and sea caves carved into slate and schist. These structures resemble the flying buttresses of Gothic cathedrals, giving the site its name.

The beach is accessible primarily during low tide, when visitors can walk on the sand and explore the large caves. Access is strictly limited to approximately two hours before and after the lowest point of the tide; at high tide, the beach virtually disappears under the water. Due to environmental protection measures and capacity limits, mandatory online reservations are required during peak seasons, such as summer, Easter, and public holidays. A free administrative permit is necessary to access the sand area during these times.

Visitors can reach the site via the A-8 motorway, with parking available near the cliffs. A seasonal shuttle bus operates from Ribadeo town center. While the sand-level route is tide-dependent, dramatic panoramas of the cliff formations are visible from official lookouts throughout the day. The area serves as an ecological sanctuary for seabirds and marine life. It is considered an ideal half-day destination, allowing visitors to combine the natural spectacle with dining in nearby Ribadeo. The site offers a unique opportunity to witness the power of wave erosion and wind action over millions of years.
