The Teatro del Soho CaixaBank is a theatre in the centre of Málaga, on Calle Córdoba, in the district that has been rebranded as Soho, the city's arts quarter. It opened in 2019 and is closely associated with the actor and director Antonio Banderas, who was born in Málaga and returned to his hometown to create a venue for musical theatre and the performing arts. The theatre is run by a foundation, with the support of a bank as its main sponsor, which explains the name. The aim was to bring Broadway-style productions to the south of Spain and to create a stage for local talent.
The building occupies a refurbished space that was formerly a cinema and theatre, and the result is a modern, comfortable auditorium. The programme is varied. It has included large-scale musicals, stage plays, dance, concerts and flamenco, as well as productions for children and young audiences. Banderas has taken part in some productions as a director and performer, and the early seasons featured musicals in Spanish that attracted large audiences. The mix of popular entertainment and more ambitious theatre makes it a lively addition to the cultural life of the city.
The theatre is not a sight to tour in the usual sense, and it does not have regular daytime visiting hours. The main way to experience it is to attend a performance, so the best approach is to look at the programme in advance and book tickets through the theatre's official channels. Prices depend on the show and the seats, and popular productions can sell out, so planning ahead pays off. For those who do not speak Spanish, musicals and dance are easier to follow than spoken drama, and some shows have subtitles or are less dependent on language.
The neighbourhood offers other things to do before or after a show. The streets around Calle Córdoba are close to the Calle Larios, the main shopping street, and the Mercado de Atarazanas, a historic market with a striking Moorish gate. The Málaga Cathedral, the Roman Theatre of Málaga, the Alcazaba and the Picasso Museum Málaga are all a short walk away, and the Centro Pompidou Málaga is by the port. Restaurants and tapas bars are plentiful, so an evening can easily combine dinner and a performance.
It suits theatre and music lovers, and visitors looking for an evening activity after a day of sightseeing. Check the current programme for dates, times and ticket availability.
