Vitoria-Gasteiz Green Belt
Vitoria-Gasteiz Green Belt
The Green Belt of Vitoria-Gasteiz is a network of five high-value urban parks—Armentia, Olarizu, Salburua, Zabalgana, and Zadorra—connected by eco-recreational corridors. Initiated in the early 1990s to address urban periphery issues and ecological degradation, the project successfully restored forests and landscapes previously affected by erosion and industrial expansion. This initiative was recognized globally for its success, being selected as one of the "100 Best Practices" for improving city living conditions at the UN International Competition in Dubai in 2000.
Visitors can explore eight designated routes, including paths, tracks, and cycle lanes, which connect the city center to these peri-urban parks. These routes are suitable for all ages and groups, offering a peaceful escape into nature while remaining accessible from the urban core. Specific green route maps are available for key parks such as Armentia, Salburua, and Olarizu, aiding navigation for those wishing to explore specific areas.
The Green Belt complements the city’s medieval "almond" layout and historic center, providing a contrast between ancient architecture and modern ecological planning. The area is easy to walk, allowing visitors to combine historic streets with green urban planning. Official tourist resources, including guides and maps in multiple languages, are available to assist travelers in planning their visits. The Green Belt serves as a vital component of Vitoria-Gasteiz’s identity, highlighting the city’s commitment to sustainability and quality of life.
