Cala Pregonda

Cala Pregonda is a remote bay on the north coast of Menorca, and it looks very different from the pale coves of the south. The sand has a rosy-golden colour, tinted by the iron-rich rocks of the area, and the shore is dotted with small rocky islets that stand in the water just off the beach. The coast here is part of the older, darker geology of northern Menorca, where slates, sandstones and reddish rocks replace the pale limestone of the south, and the coastline is rougher, with a wilder feeling. The shape of the bay and the colours of the sand and rock make it one of the most photographed places on the island.

The beach is not easy to reach, and that is part of its appeal. There is no road to the sand. You park near the hamlet of Binimel·là or on the track above and walk for roughly half an hour across open scrubland, following a path that is also part of the Camí de Cavalls, the long-distance coastal route around the island. The route is mostly gentle but exposed, with little shade, so a hat, water and sturdy shoes are essential. In the heat of summer, it is worth doing the walk early or late in the day.

There are no beach bars, loungers, toilets or other services, so you must bring everything you need and take your rubbish away. The lack of facilities has helped to keep the place wild. The sea is clear and attractive, with sandy and rocky areas that suit swimming and snorkelling, although waves can be strong when the northern wind, the Tramuntana, blows. In windy weather the bay can be rough and the sand may be uncomfortable, so check conditions before setting off.

Walkers can continue along the coastal path to nearby viewpoints and small coves, and the shoreline to the east and west has rocky headlands with fine views. The area is also pleasant for sunset, as the low light brings out the warm colours of the rock and sand.

It suits walkers, photographers, snorkellers and anyone who values quiet beaches and does not mind effort. Families with small children should be prepared for the walk, and it is wise to start early to find a good spot on the sand.
