Casa de Colón

Casa de Colón is a museum and research institution in Vegueta, the historic quarter of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. The city was founded here in 1478, and Vegueta still keeps the layout and character of those early years, with whitewashed houses, carved wooden balconies and narrow streets around the Santa Ana Cathedral. The museum occupies a group of buildings that grew from the residence of the island's early governors, and it takes its name from Christopher Columbus, who called at Gran Canaria in 1492 before sailing west. His ships stopped for repairs, in particular the rudder of the Pinta, and he passed several weeks in the islands.

The museum does not present the building as a preserved private home. Instead, its rooms and courtyards are used to tell the story of Atlantic navigation and the relationship between the Canary Islands and the Americas. Because the islands lay on the route that ships used for centuries, Canarian ports became way stations, and Canarian emigrants, merchants and sailors shaped both sides of the ocean.
