Iglesia de Santiago

The Iglesia de Santiago el Viejo, Saint James the Elder, is a small Romanesque church in Zamora, also known as the Church of the Knights, or Santiago de los Caballeros. It belongs to the great group of Romanesque churches that Zamora is famous for, a collection built in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries when the city was a frontier fortress on the Duero. Among them it is one of the smaller and plainer examples, built of local stone with thick walls, small windows and a restrained, austere design, and its modest scale gives it a quiet, intimate character that contrasts with the larger and richer buildings in the old town.

The church has a connection with the legends of the Cid, the eleventh-century Castilian warrior. According to local tradition, the Cid was dubbed a knight here by King Ferdinand I, which explains the alternative name of the Church of the Knights. Whether or not the story is historically accurate, it fits with the setting: Zamora was the scene of the siege of the city in 1072, which became a famous episode in the ballads of medieval Castile. The ballad tradition of Zamora, known as the Romancero Zamorano, tells of the Cid, of the princess Urraca and of the treacherous knight Vellido Dolfos, and the church is linked to this literary heritage, which is part of the city’s identity.

The interior is simple, with a single nave and a basilica-style plan, and stone walls with rounded arches. The absence of decoration is part of its appeal, and the quiet, cool interior gives a feeling of the original medieval devotion. The church sits near the edge of the old city, and the position gives a view of how the city was defended and how it grew beyond its walls. The nearby castle and the line of the old walls help in understanding the setting.

Zamora is the best place in Spain to see Romanesque architecture in a compact area, and the Iglesia de Santiago el Viejo is a good stop on a route that includes the cathedral, the Colegiata de Santa María la Mayor, San Juan de los Caballeros, San Ildefonso and San Vicente. The Museo de Zamora and the Parador de Zamora are in the area.

Opening hours are limited, usually in the morning and the evening, and may change, so check with the local tourist office or the church. As a place of worship, it asks for respectful behaviour. A visit takes about fifteen minutes, but the church repays a slower look at the stone and carvings.
