Parque de la Ciudadela

Parque de la Ciudadela is a green space in Ciudad Real, the capital of the province of the same name, in La Mancha in central Spain. It is a public park with free entry, open during the day, intended for walking, sitting and play.

Ciudad Real itself was founded in the thirteenth century by King Alfonso X, who gave the settlement royal status and the name that it still carries, the Royal City. The city sits on the flat plain of La Mancha, the landscape of Don Quixote, where the horizon is wide and the summers are long, hot and dry. In that climate, parks matter. Shade from mature trees, a path to stroll along in the cool of the evening, a bench and a drinking fountain are valuable features, and public gardens are an important part of the daily routine for many residents. Families bring children to play, older residents meet to talk, and people exercise in the early morning or after sunset.

The city’s main historic sights are within a short distance. The Cathedral, with its Gothic structure and later additions, and the Puerta de Toledo, a medieval gateway that is one of the few surviving parts of the old walls, give the city a historical centre. The Museo de Ciudad Real and the Church of San Pedro Apóstol are further stops, and the Casa de la Cadena building is also within the old town. A visit to the park can be combined with a walk through these streets, and it makes a pleasant pause in the afternoon.

Campo de Criptana, famous for its windmills linked to Don Quixote, lies in another town of the region and needs a separate excursion by car. Ciudad Real is also a stop on the high-speed rail line between Madrid and Andalusia, so it is easy to reach by train.

As with any city park, the best times are the morning and the early evening, especially in summer, when midday temperatures can be very high. Because the park is a free public space, there are no ticket queues, and a visit can be as short or as long as you like. Check with the tourist office for any events held there.
