Castillo de San José

The Castillo de San José is an 18th-century defensive fortress located in Arrecife Bay, Lanzarote, Spain. Since 1976, it has housed the MIAC (International Museum of Contemporary Art), transforming the historic military structure into a center for art and culture. The museum features contemporary art collections from Canarian, national, and international artists. Notable permanent works include pieces by masters such as Picasso, Miró, Francis Bacon, and Henry Moore, alongside dedicated rooms for Canarian artists like Pepe Dámaso and Pancho Lasso.

Visitors can explore the extensive collection, which includes a growing focus on photography. The stark, unchanged architecture of the castle provides a unique setting for these abstract works. Visitors can climb to the roof and battlements for panoramic views of the bay and the commercial port. The site also features a restaurant located in a glass-enclosed structure added by artist César Manrique, offering Canarian cuisine with views of the water.

The museum is open daily from 11:00 to 18:00. General admission costs €5.40, with free entry for children aged 0–6. No prior booking is required for the museum, though restaurant bookings are handled separately. A typical visit lasts approximately 60 minutes. The historic building contains stairs and uneven surfaces, so visitors should be aware of accessibility limitations.
