Colegiata de Santa María la Mayor

The Colegiata de Santa María la Mayor is located in the town of Toro, within the province of Zamora, Spain. Although often associated with the region, it is important to note that the building is situated in Toro, a town approximately 20 kilometers from the city of Zam itself. The church is a prime example of Romanes architecture, specifically the "Tormes style," which is characterized by its robust stone construction and intricate details.

The building is constructed from local sandstone, which gives it a warm, golden hue that is particularly striking in the sunlight. The exterior features a prominent tower-dome, a distinctive element in the region, and a beautifully decorated facade known as the Pórtico de la Majestad. This entrance, completed in the late 13th century, is adorned with polychrome sculptures depicting religious scenes, including the Virgin and the Final Judgment.

Inside, the church is equally impressive, featuring a basilica plan with a central nave and side aisles. The interior is home to significant artistic works, including the famous Virgen de la Mosca (Virgin of the Fly), a 13th-century painting that is renowned for its realistic depiction of a fly on the Virgin's tunic. The church also houses a 13th-century sculpture of a pregnant Virgin, a rare and significant artistic feature.
